So Much Deeper

Chloe and I have been talking and praying about this for a couple months now and are excited to present this post. A little while back we were talking to a friend about some things that we were seeing in our mutli-media world and our friend brought up some excellent points. We have been hounding her ever since to write a post, so we could share with you. Let us introduce you to our dear friend: Scarlett Mae.

I am going to let Scarlett take it from here…

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I am grateful for the opportunity to write about one of my favorite tv shows. So here we go…

Miraculous: The Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir is a fun, playful “kids” show, but I find that when you dig a little deeper, one can truly find some interesting truths. We follow our two main protagonists, Marinette Dupan-Chang and Adrien Agreste. Each has alter egos as the superheroes of Paris, Ladybug and Cat Noir! The show follows each of them in both their time as civilians and superheroes. Here, we will talk about two of the main ships in the show and why I believe they are important.

First, let’s talk about the love and friendship between “Adrienette.” Adrien Agreste is a famous supermodel who has been highly sheltered most of his life. He has a kind smile and a helpful hand. Marinette is a strong, yet sometimes clumsy girl, who loves to help out her classmates whenever she can. However, she seems to lose all sense and words when it comes to Adrien.

Marinette first fell in love with Adrien when he offered her an umbrella and an apology under stormy clouds. We see this in part two of the Origins episode.

From then on, she has struggled with her emotions for Adrien. She doesn’t know how to tell him about her feelings, or ask him out because she cannot get a coherent sentence out around him. She has multiple pictures of him around her room and frequently daydreams about him. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. I’m sure all of us can relate to Marinette on some level about her “crush”. However, I don’t think that her love goes much deeper than that. It’s just as simple as that, a crush. (This is shown further in the newest season.)

The reason I say this is because when you look through the show, she hasn’t ever had a chance to get to know Adrien past his good looks and kind smile. Adrien frequently tries to talk to Marinette, but again, hasn’t ever had a good conversation with her. Really the closest we have gotten is in the episode “Gamer”.

This exchange is cute and still has a few fumbling moments for the both of them, but it is still the closest thing they have had to an actual conversation. Now, I will not deny that this ship is super cute. “Adrienette” is a perfect fluff ship and they have plenty of cute moments scattered throughout the show. However, I cannot say that this will ever be my favorite ship, purely because their love for one another doesn’t run as deep as the next couple I am about to talk about.

Now we can talk about the ship that has been my favorite in the whole TV show for a long time, “LadyNoir”. This ship consists of the “alter egos” of both Adrien and Marinette. Ladybug is Marinette’s alias. She is Paris’ spotted superhero. She gains her power from the ladybug earrings of the miraculous box and somehow always seems to save the day with her Lucky Charm. She is strong, confident, and determined. Her male counterpart, Cat Noir, is the other half of this duo. He draws his power from the cat ring of the miraculous box. Although he is often overlooked as the “sidekick” to Ladybug, he is just as important. He is funny, flirty, and loyal.

Throughout this whole series Cat Noir is very clear about his feelings for Ladybug. He frequently flirts with and has various nicknames for her. That is one of the reasons that I love this ship. Cat is clear about his feelings for Ladybug, and Ladybug is clear about her feelings for him and why, at the moment, she cannot return those romantic feelings.

They are both completely transparent with one another. Due to their secret identities, they both can be completely themselves without fear of judgement. Cat can be flirty and tell all the cat puns he wants without feeling like he needs to put up any walls. However, in his civilian life, he is very sheltered (as previously stated) and needs to protect himself from all the people in his life who have power over him. Ladybug was the first person he was able to truly get to know without those boundaries. Similarly, Ladybug can be herself with him. She doesn’t feel the need to hide any of her personality around him because no one will ever know who she is. She depends on her Kitty for support and looks to him in times of need.

Their relationship is built off of pure, blind trust and loyalty. They risk their lives for each other and the city of Paris daily. Of course, being in many life or death situations with a person is going to help you build trust and a relationship with them. Cat is seen many times literally giving up his life for Ladybug and trusting her to bring him back. This trust is also extremely evident in Ladybug’s daily actions, for example in her many plans she can tell him what she expects and she knows that he will follow through.

Even though she may not return Cat’s romantic feelings, it is clear that she trusts him and has a strong relationship with him. She knows that she cannot bear to be without him, and this is shown every time that Cat “dies”.

In addition, this pair also spends a lot of time together. Outside of the main episodes and villains, they go on patrols frequently. During that time, they can talk and truly get to know each other. The love they have for each other, whether it be platonic (for now) or romantic, runs far deeper than the love between Adrien and Marinette. LadyNoir will always have a special place in my heart. The show does an amazing job of showing both extremes to a “young love”. I am excited to see how both of these ships grow and develop as the show goes on.

Until next time,

Peace out Lovers!
