Together or Not At All

To the Boy and Girl Who Waited…

Their love story was not easy, but it was “Together or not at all.”

Last year around this time I talked about River Song and the Doctor from BBC’s Doctor Who. This week I am going to talk about the relationship that started it all: Amelia Pond and Rory Williams.

These two show us what it is to CHOOSE love.

When you are travelling through space and time it is so easy to get your mind on the big picture and neglect what is in front of you. Amy and Rory had a lot of lessons to learn together, and the TARDIS turned out to be the perfect place for it.

Lesson #1: Choose Love

Amy officially boards the TARDIS for the first time on the night before her wedding. A little uncertain if she is ready to marry, she takes the opportunity to run away with the Doctor. When the Doctor finds this out he takes it upon himself to fix her and her relationship. Once Rory is on the TARDIS they are forced into a scenario that literally requires Amy to choose between the Doctor and Rory.

For Rory it has always been Amy. He would do anything for her, and all she had to do is smile at him, but he was never truly assured of her love for him, until he finds out (in the clip above) that she literally kills herself just to ensure that they would be together no matter what.

Lesson #2: Waiting for Love

For these two the road to the alter wasn’t simple. After Amy made her choice they both decided to stay with the Doctor for a couple more adventures. During one of their adventures Rory is literally erased from existence in an effort to save Amy from a similar fate. We later find out that he is reanimated into living plastic (The Nesting: Plastic that believes it has a Conciousness). When Amy is caught in his shoot as he was trying to repress the call to kill, he puts her in a holding/healing cell and stands guard for 2,000 years!

Amy ALWAYS knows that Rory will come for her no matter where she is. When she is separated on a Planet of Killer Healing robots, and left behind for 36 years. She knows that he is coming even when she is being tortured by people that want to weaponize her baby.

There should have never been a question about whether it was the Doctor or Rory… Because it will always be Rory.

Lesson # 3: Together or Not At All

Growing old with the man or woman you love is every Hopeless Romantic’s dream. What would you do if that chance at a full life together was compromised? Amy and Rory thought that they had played out their life of adventure with the Doctor, but were convinced to go a couple more adventures. One final adventure would ground them for good, but at least they would be together.

There is no Amy without Rory… we saw that once and there was little but a girl trying to makes sense of an empty world. Rory waited by himself, loving her from a distance since they were kids, and when he finally gets her he dies or she gets abducted or he gets abducted, and finally he sent back in time never to return. She has a choice… and CHOOSES Rory.

This whole post is a lot of wibbly wobbly nonsense but I wanted you to get a sense of what I see in this series. Doctor Who was never meant to be for everyone but there is something for everyone if you are looking for it. The marriage and general love story of Amy and Rory is one to look to. There is a type of love that speaks beyond the boundries of even space itself! I want that! I want to love someone that I would literally choose to give up the wonders of the galaxies to be by their side. No matter what. But I also want to know what it is to be the one that is chosen, I want to be what is missing from his life and he just hasn’t found me yet.

Until Next Time
Peace Out Lovers.

I am a Hopeless Romantic. This is my way of working out my thoughts and feelings about the ideas and themes that I see in media and the world around me. I will be joined some times by my sisters as they share their ideas as well.
